First Baptist Church Clarksville Online Communion
There are two ordinances that the church is called to oversee: baptism and communion. In this season of Covid-19, we do not want to put these ordinances “on hold.” With that in mind, we are excited to mention that in an upcoming online service Pastor Ron will be leading us in communion.
The first tradition of communion was actually modeled for us by Jesus in someone’s home (of all places)! This story is known as the Last Supper and is found in Matthew 26, Luke 22, and Mark 14. It occurred during the time of Passover where Jewish people celebrated and remembered how God delivered them out of Egypt and saved them.
With this as the setting, Jesus gathered His disciples together before He was to be crucified to celebrate Passover. But He didn’t follow the typical Passover tradition. Instead it says He, “took the bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said “this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me”” – Luke 22:19. Verse 20 goes on to tell us that He took the cup and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”
Paul says this:
For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it, and said, “this is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “this cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. – 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
Jesus gives us and Paul reminds us what our motivation should be when it comes to communion (the Lord’s Supper). That it is a powerful symbol and reminder of Jesus’ body that was broken and His blood that was poured out for us. As followers of Christ, it is not a means to our salvation but rather, a testament to our faith in the atoning work of Jesus on the cross, the new covenant.
